Do you know how to report a workplace injury?

You work hard, and at the end of the day, you want nothing more than to go home and enjoy the evening. However, if you get hurt while at work, everything in your life may change.

Do you know what steps you need to take to report an on-the-job injury? Under Colorado law, reporting any injury, even a minor one, should take place within four working days of the incident. If unsure about what to do next, take a look at how you can go about reporting an injury.

Giving your employer the news

When you get hurt at work, it is crucial that you tell your supervisor. Regardless of the type or severity of the injury, your supervisor will request that you fill out an employer’s first report of injury form. In this document, you will give a detailed account of:

What led to the injury
Where the incident occurred
If anyone witnessed the event
Your wage history
Your employer then has 10 days to send this report off to the workers’ compensation insurance carrier to start the claims process.

The insurance company steps in

Once the employer informs the insurance company of the injury, the claims process officially begins. During this process, an adjuster will investigate the facts contained in your first report of injury. This includes interviewing any witnesses listed, your supervisor and other coworkers in the area. Witness statements become crucial evidence in claim proceedings, especially if the employer raises doubt as to the validity of the claim.

Insurance adjusters will also want to take a look at your medical records if you have received treatment. If their investigation results in acceptance of your claim, they may direct you to their own treatment providers or facilities for further care.

Dealing with a workers’ compensation injury claim may seem daunting. With the proper attitude and assistance, you may get the care and coverage you need during a difficult time.
