Taking pictures to preserve accident evidence

When dealing with the aftermath of a car accident in the Denver area, many people forget to take action to preserve evidence. It is not enough for victims to contact the authorities, file a police report and seek out medical attention. Though the police and accident investigators may take steps to determine the facts of what transpired, you should not rely on their efforts alone to protect you from a miscarriage of justice should negligent party try to discredit your claim, or if you have underinsured or uninsured motorist issues

One way to protect the evidence and integrity of your claim is to take pictures of the accident scene, only if you can safely do so. Here are some key areas you should try to include.

All potential injuries

A picture is worth a thousand words and is often more effective at showcasing the trauma of a car accident than words in a report. Regardless of how minor you may feel your scrapes or bruises are, take pictures of them and any other injuries right after the collision. Have medical personnel take photos and capture images of them several days later, as some injuries take several days to appear.

All vehicles

While it may seem pertinent to take pictures of your own vehicle to highlight the damage caused from the car accident, providing photos of all involved vehicles can help insurance companies determine liability and potential areas of damage you might overlook. This is extremely beneficial if there are multiple reports or versions of the accident, where your credibility may be in question.

Photos can help prevent insurance companies and the negligent party from denying liability and being held accountable for the incident. In addition to taking images of injuries and cars, be sure to get a few snapshots of the intersection and location where the accident took place. The more pictures you have to substantiate your claim, the fewer complications you will encounter during the settlement process.
