How common are distracted driving accidents?

Although most drivers would think twice before getting behind the wheel of their car intoxicated, they do not offer the same hesitation when texting while driving. As a result, nine people die across the country in distracted driving accidents daily. In Colorado alone, there are 43 auto accidents involving distracted driving daily, most of them causing serious injury or even death.

In National Distracted Driving Awareness month, the Colorado Department of Transportation is leading the effort to highlight the dangers of distracted driving, which contributes to around 13 percent of crashes annually. Fifty-three people died and more than 6000 were injured in such car accidents in 2018 alone.

Despite knowing and recognizing that driving requires a driver's full attention, both physically and mentally, an alarming number of people still allow themselves to get distracted on the road. Texting while driving, just one example of a distraction, is perhaps the most common, as 90 percent of surveyed drivers claim they had engaged in the dangerous behavior in the last seven days.

An accident involving distracted driving is one that can be prevented had the driver been paying attention to changing road conditions. Their failure results in catastrophic injuries and fatalities that turn the lives of accident victims and their loved ones upside down.

While it is not possible to quantify the loss of a loved one, it is possible to hold the negligent driver accountable for their reckless behavior. Injuries and deaths bring forth unforeseen expenses in the form of medical bills, funeral expenses and loss of wages. It might be possible to recover these costs through a civil lawsuit and an experienced attorney may be able to discuss the way forward with those who are seeking compensation.
