Distracted driving encompasses many bad habits behind the wheel

Distracted driving accidents continue to rise around the country, and Colorado is definitely no exception to that trend. According to the Colorado Department of Transportation, distracted driving caused 605 fatalities throughout the state in 2016.

While that number is startling, it is likely much higher. Underreporting occurs regularly with distracted driving, mostly because people do not want to admit their fault. Aside from cellphones, what qualifies as distracted driving? Take a look at the everyday tasks you may engage in while driving that could cause an accident.

Changing the radio station

These days, many newer model cars have infotainment centers that serve as a sync up hub for electronic devices. They can store multiple radio stations, allowing you to access them with a finger tap. The large electronic screen can cause you to divert your eyes too long from the road ahead. When flipping the station, keep it quick.

Reading a GPS map

Instead of listening to turn-by-turn directions, you may prefer to look at the map or read directions. This act may wind up costing you precious seconds, during which time you could miss a car, child or animal in the road. Instead, rely on the voice directions to get you where you need to go safely.

Eating and drinking

Fast food restaurants pride themselves on their quick and convenient service, allowing you to get back on the road. Eating and drinking while driving can take away from devoting your full attention to the task at hand. Dropping food or spilling drinks and the like can cause your eyes to avert from the windshield and your hands to go from the steering wheel to a burger.

In this current high-tech age, cellphone use behind the wheel is cause for concern. Distracted driving, however, can come in different forms, not just the most common. Stay alert, and ensure you make every effort to do your part in reducing roadway crashes by remaining focused and free of distractions.
