How to use a smartphone after an auto accident

Winter is coming to Colorado, and that means you need to pay more attention to your surroundings when behind the wheel. The cold weather and potential snow will make roadways more dangerous, so you need to allow extra time to get to your destinations and drive slowly everywhere you go.

The snow and icy roadways often lead to an increase in car accidents in Colorado. In the event that you ever find yourself in this situation, you need to realize you probably have a valuable tool right in your pocket. Although you should never use your smartphone while driving, it can come in handy in the immediate aftermath of a collision.

Photograph anything that can serve as evidence

Pictures serve as excellent evidence in case your claim goes to court. Most people know they need to photograph all vehicles involved, but there is much more you should take pictures of at this time.

As long as you are physically capable of doing so, you should photograph any injuries you, your passengers and the other driver sustained. You should also take pictures of the inside of both vehicles because certain types of damage may not be visible from the outside. You want to ensure you have clear pictures of the other driver's insurance card and driver's license. Finally, you should photograph the road because some conditions could have contributed to the crash. A pothole in the road or an obstructed traffic sign could make other parties liable.

Take video of nearby witnesses

Smartphones also have a video function where you can record video evidence. In the event any eyewitnesses saw the crash, you can take a quick video of them describing what they saw. This serves as significant evidence in court because you have an account of what happened from an objective third party right after the crash. Although you can call people into court later, people's memories can fade, and the witnesses may forget pertinent details. Video helps a great deal.
