Steps to take after a motorcycle hit-and-run

Motorcyclists have unique risks on roadways. Colorado is home to numerous motorcycle fatalities every year, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, including 125 in 2016 alone.

Even though most motorcyclists involved in accidents do not lose their lives, they may still sustain serious injuries. The matter becomes even more complicated if the other motorist leaves the scene. Here are the steps to take if you find yourself in such a situation.

Gather evidence

If you are able to, then you should collect as much evidence as you can until the police and paramedics can arrive at the scene. Retain as much information about the other vehicle as you can. Getting a picture of the license plate will help immensely, but even getting the make, model and color of the vehicle can help police find the driver. You should also see if any witnesses in the vicinity can talk to the police to provide their point of view.

Provide information for the police report

For a hit-and-run, you absolutely want an official police report on record. Provide your side of the story. This is also the time when you need someone to take you to a hospital, so you can receive a full inspection from a doctor. The rush of adrenaline may prevent you from feeling certain injuries, and you want to make sure you know the full extent of your injuries before speaking with your insurance agency.

Seek legal recourse

You deserve compensation after a hit-and-run, so you need to file a lawsuit after the incident. In addition to seeking compensation for any injuries and damage to your motorcycle, you can attempt to receive money for pain and suffering, lost wages and mental health counseling. Hit-and-runs are serious offenses, so do everything in your power to protect yourself.
