Denver area retail employees injured on the job during robbery

There are many ways in which Denver residents may find themselves injured on the job. From slip-and-fall accidents, to burns, to crush injuries or repetitive stress injuries, any job site can be the scene of a workplace accident. Some workplace injuries, however, may not necessarily be tied to an accident, but they may be the result of a physical assault on the job.

As one recent example, two employees were working at a local pet food and supply store in the early hours of the morning. Suddenly, multiple individuals wearing masks on their faces and brandishing weapons entered the store. They proceeded to beat the two employees, a male and a female, before fleeing with cash stolen from the store. The workers were treated at an area hospital for their injuries.

Attacks like this, while typically rare, are unfortunately a risk that retail employees face. But like any other employee injured in the course of performing a job, retail employees injured in a criminal act may wish to seek workers' compensation benefits. They will need support for their medical expenses and lost wages at a minimum; depending on the nature of the assault, they may need mental health treatment for at least some time before recovering enough to be able to return to work comfortably at the same location.

To claim workers' compensation benefits, an injured employee will need to be able to demonstrate that he or she was on the job at the time of the injury and that it occurred while doing the job. While thankfully far less common than other types of workplace injuries, an assault by a criminal breaking into one's workplace that results in injuries may qualify for benefits. A legal professional can help analyze the incident and prepare a thorough application, as well as supporting an injured worker through the appeals process if the claim is initially denied.
