Basic precautions can help prevent bad weather car crashes

Most experienced Denver motorists have a pretty good idea of how to drive safely when the weather turns blustery and snow or freezing rain covers our roadways. Yet collisions and other kinds of accidents are all too common when the roads get slick, and visibility becomes limited.

So as we proceed through the winter months, there are some important things to keep in mind when driving in inclement conditions. By taking the following measures, you can improve your chances of staying safe and accident-free:

  • When driving on snow-covered roads, avoid spinning your tires. When your tires spin, the snow melts and actually makes the road's surface slicker. If you are having trouble moving, try accelerating just enough to go forward.
  • Make sure your tires have enough tread. You can check this by inserting a penny between two of the treads. If the treads don't reach the top of Lincoln's head, it's time to get new tires.
  • Familiarize yourself with your car's drive type. All-wheel drive, front-wheel drive and rear-wheel drive cars all handle differently, especially on slick surfaces. For example, front-wheel drive vehicles are less likely than rear-wheel drive vehicles to go into a 360-degree spinout.
  • In bad weather, a hazardous situation can crop up in the blink of an eye. If you understand how to properly react, you could spare your car from being damaged. You may even avoid being in a serious accident.

But sometimes, there are drivers on the road who do not take the proper precautions. They may not slow down, or they may drive while distracted, which spells trouble when the roads are slippery. And if you are hurt in a collision with a negligent driver, a Colorado personal injury attorney could represent your interests when pursuing compensation, either from insurance companies or by filing a lawsuit against the party responsible for the accident.
