Motorcycle accidents alarm officials, lead to emphasis on motorcycle safety

As the summer turns to fall, many motorcyclists will be out on Denver area roadways. They want to enjoy the last few weeks of nice weather before they have to put their bikes away for the winter. Motorcyclists know all too well the dangers that they may encounter when they are out riding, and unfortunately, there have been a number of accidents that have led to serious injuries.

In Aurora, four motorcyclists were killed in three different accidents in one week. Law enforcement officers believe that a number of the crashes were caused by distracted motorists, and that the drivers did not see the motorcyclists prior to the crash.

The number of accidents is alarming to officials because this has been a growing problem. Last year, fatalities in Colorado motorcycle accidents reached their highest levels since 2002, according to the state’s Department of Transportation.

Police are reminding both motorists and motorcyclists of steps that they can take to prevent an accident from happening. They encourage motorcyclists to wear bright or reflective clothing, and to always wear a helmet when out riding. They should pay particularly close attention to other motorists at intersections, because some drivers may not give motorcyclists the right-of-way at all times.

Motorists should put down their cellphones while driving. No talking or texting when out on area roadways. Officials emphasize that taking one’s eyes off of the road for even a split-second can drastically increase the chances of a serious accident happening.

Additionally, motorists should be sure to check all blind spots before moving into a lane of traffic. Motorcyclists will not be able to slam on their brakes or quickly move out of the way, because the handling of their vehicles is much more dependent upon balance. Most of these types of moves would result in the motorcyclist losing control, and absorbing most of the impact of the crash.

If you have been injured in a motorcycle accident, you should speak to an experienced personal injury attorney as soon as possible. Your attorney will serve in many different roles throughout your case, including helping you understand the law in your situation and pursue the maximum amount of compensation available to you.

In most of these accidents, the injuries that result lead to life-altering changes. This often means that expensive care will be required to treat the initial injuries, as well as any rehab or subsequent surgeries that may be necessary in order to help get you as close to normal as possible. Do not let insurers tell you what your case is worth – you need an attorney to fight for you.
