One officer pleads to society to combat drunk driving

A recent article in the Coloradoan features a sheriff’s deputy in Larimer County who also happens to be the top enforcer for the DUI Enforcement Unit. The officer got hooked on driving under the influence investigations and arrests since 2002 when he shadowed an enforcement officer for the DUI division. Since then he has made 750 DUI arrests and 200 in the last full calendar year alone.

It may seem he alone could wipe out the drunk driving problem in Northern Colorado. But unfortunately, that isn’t the case. Annually, around 150 fatalities are caused by accidents involving alcohol and approximately 26,000 people are charged with DUI. Moreover, more than 33 percent of traffic accidents resulting in fatalities involved alcohol.

With numbers like these, it is easy to understand why even a revered deputy would send out a plea to the public for help. While one man can make a difference in the number of drunk drivers who were stopped before an injury or fatality could occur, he needs society to come on board and do its part in voting for tougher penalties and changing behaviors.

If a drunk driver has robbed you of loved ones or of your own physical health and well-being, know that with a strong attorney advocating in your corner, you can set a precedent and contribute to the war against this plague on our roads. One death is too many, much less an average of 150 senseless deaths per year in Colorado. Let’s all work with this motivated deputy to make right the past and secure a better future.
