4 mistakes to avoid at all costs after an auto accident

Colorado's Department of Motor Vehicles offers some suggestions for what people should do after a car accident. It is vital to never leave the scene until police have a chance to arrive. You should also make sure to exchange your contact and insurance information with the other party.

In the heat of the moment, it can be easy to overlook an essential step in ensuring you have a successful auto accident claim. One mistake could cause you to lose out on hundreds or even thousands of dollars on the insurance claim. Make sure to avoid these mistakes far too many motorists make.

Mistake #1: Admitting fault

Even if you think you caused the collision, you never want to admit fault at the scene. There could be extenuating circumstances that reduce your overall liability. You should not even say, "I am sorry," as this can imply you have something to be sorry for.

Mistake #2: Failing to see a doctor

You may feel fine after a crash. It may not have been that bad, but you always want to see a doctor following a collision. Even a small fender bender can result in neck and back problems.

Mistake #3: Talking to your insurance agent too much

You should contact your auto insurance provider within 24 hours of the accident. You need to provide your insurance with information, but you do not want to give too many details. If the agent asks you how you feel and you respond with, "I feel fine," then your provider can use that statement to claim your injuries were not that severe.

Mistake #4: Taking the first settlement

In an effort to get this incident out of the way, your insurance provider may offer a relatively quick settlement. You want an attorney to look over the details to any settlement offer because once you take the money, you will be unable to re-open the case. Make sure you understand what your medical bills and other expenses look like before taking a check.
